Humane Society International Wins Campaign of the Year Award
HSI Recognised for the Ban the Cruel Seal Trade Campaign
Humane Society International is the proud recipient of the Campaign of the Year award at the European Public Affairs Awards in Brussels.
This highly coveted award, which is voted for by the professional lobby community in Brussels, was given to HSI for its high profile and successful lobby campaign to achieve an EU ban on trade in seal products.
“We are thrilled the role of Humane Society International in achieving a European ban on the commercial trade in seal products has been recognised through such a prestigious award” said HSI Director, Michael Kennedy.
“In the face of a massive and unfounded lobby by the Canadian government, pro-seal and other vested interests HSI succeeded in showing European decision makers the truth behind the cruel seal slaughter. The immediate impact of the campaign resulted in saving the lives of 250,000 seal pups earlier this year”.
Despite this victory, the seal kill has not ended and much remains to be achieved to end this cruelty once and for all with the Canadian Government now seeking consultations with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to challenge the ban.
Achieving this European ban highlights yet another campaign success for HSI in working to secure the protection for all animals, both wild and domestic, around the world.
“Along with the good news that our project partners in India, Wildlife SOS, hope to have all dancing bears taken off the streets of India by the end of the year; securing the protection of nearly 2 million acres of wildlife habitats in Australia; the national expose of the mislabelling of farm animal products across the country; and holding the line on forest protection in the global climate change negotiations, it has been a year of some success for HSI”, noted Mr Kennedy.
