Coalition commits 15 million dollars to Western Sydney conservation

20 August, 2010

Humane Society International (HSI) welcomes the recent announcement by Shadow Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Heritage, Greg Hunt MP, which commits more than $15 million in funding and resources to protect and link conservation areas in Western Sydney.

The funds would secure habitat for wildlife and protect remaining viable and representative stands of an HSI nominated Critically Endangered Ecological Community, Cumberland Plain Woodland, by allowing the purchase of isolated remnants of bushland to be linked with a series of nature reserves in a Greater Western Sydney Conservation Corridor.  Additionally, the commitment would provide support for an audit of Greater Western Sydney’s bushland in an attempt to identify conservation values, including updated listings of threatened or endangered species, and dedicate four ‘Green Army’ deployments to plant trees and revegetate sites identified as degraded.

The $15 million dedicated to these conservation areas would provide much needed protection for the Cumberland Plain Woodland and numerous wildlife species that rely on it for habitat.  With around 5% of this Critically Endangered Ecological Community remaining, high levels of funding are absolutely essential” said HSI’s Michael Kennedy.

Comparatively, the Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett AM MP, has stated that a re-elected Gillard Government will invest $7.5 million to help protect the Cumberland Plain Woodland areas of Western Sydney through property acquisition to connect the corridor and the funding of land care efforts.
