Help bring about truth in labelling

ACT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

It has never been more difficult for consumers to make informed choices when purchasing animal-derived food products. As public awareness of the plight and suffering of the more than 500 million animals in factory farm environments continues to grow, consumers are faced with an abundance of poorly defined terms and product labels that are increasingly difficult to decipher. These include caged, grain fed, free-range, open range, bred free-range, organic and bio-dynamic. The absence of standardised definitions leaves these labelling terms open to interpretation and misuse by producers.

Without adequate truth in labelling laws and regulations, consumers are not in a position to make informed purchasing decisions.

To demonstrate the need for consistent national standards and definitions on animal products, Humane Society International (HSI) has developed a national online consumer survey that will gauge the understanding of the Australian public to the suite of labelling terms currently in use on a range of animal products. The survey is available at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=eijPMfd4Y1CGM1ZHx8b7_2bg_3d_3d

Later this year, the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council will be meeting to undertake the most comprehensive review of food labelling law and policy in recent times.

HSI hopes to feed the results of the consumer survey into the Ministerial Council deliberations to bring about tighter controls on animal-welfare labelling, and ultimately have them direct Food Standards Australia New Zealand to develop a nationally consistent labelling scheme that permits the use of only a limited number of legally defined terms on animal products.

We need as many surveys completed as possible. Please help us by distributing the link for the national consumer survey to everyone on your circulation lists.
