Asian Elephants

elephantHSI has provided funds to a program run by Flora and Fauna International which focuses on rescuing captive Asian elephants in Sumatra. Many elephants (to date over 500) have been captured from the wild and taken to ‘training centres’ in order to subdue them for captive life. Life for elephants in the training centres' is bleak, and there is no doubt they are subjected to cruel training practices. The Conservation Response Units (CRUs) HSI helps fund have been set up to rescue elephants from such camps, to avoid further captures, to better conserve elephants in the wild, and to raise awareness amongst local people of the importance of protecting the remaining wild elephants and their forest habitats.
