leave a bequest
How can I help animals when I no longer share their world?
A bequest to HSI is an uncomplicated way to continue to protect animals and the planet long into the future. It is a gift to HSI that you have mentioned in your Will and that will be released to HSI when your Estate is settled.
Your Will is much more than a legal document. It provides you with an opportunity to make a statement about your beliefs and values. When you decide to give such an important gift you want to be confident that it will be used as effectively as possible on your behalf.
Our respect for our donors' generosity is reflected in our ability to deliver such low administration costs year after year, resulting in over 85% of all donations going towards animal protection.
We are effective. We have protected millions of hectares of vital habitat and protected millions of animals from exploitation and abuse.
Our global organisation was established in 1954 and has been protecting animals and the environment around the world for over 50 years.
Our accounts are audited annually by accredited auditors. Our annual report is available here or by calling 1800 333 737.
Your Will is probably the most important document you will ever sign. It will have a lasting impact on your loved ones and to any organisation you wish to benefit. There are a few different options for leaving a charitable bequest and you should consider these carefully:
A residual bequest is simply a gift of whatever is left of your Estate – or a percentage thereof – after all your other gifts, taxes and debts have been fulfilled. This is the type of bequest that is highly recommended, as it allows you to decide exactly how much you want to leave to your loved ones, whilst leaving whatever may be left over to HSI. Typical residual bequests can include:
A percentage of the total value of your estate;
A specific cash amount;
A specific gift of say real estate, stocks, shares, bonds etc;
THE IMPORTANCE OF LEGAL ADVICE
It is important to seek qualified legal advice when preparing your will. Wills are very important legal documents and it is vital that the will you create reflects your intentions correctly and is legally binding. Your solicitor may find the following clause helpful in preparing your will:
For residual bequests:
I give and bequeath to Humane Society International Inc (ABN 63 510 927 032), in aid of that organisation and for its general purposes, the rest and residue of my Estate, for which the receipt of the Treasurer or other officer shall be sufficient discharge to my Executor for the Bequest
For specific cash amounts:
“I give and bequeath the (sum of $ or whatever type of bequest you feel appropriate to your situation) to Humane Society International Inc (ABN 63 510 927 032) for its general purposes and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer for the time being of Humane Society International Inc. shall be complete discharge to my executors in respect of any sum paid to Humane Society International Inc.”.
It is important to use the HSI's registered name, ABN and address.
