Hands-on Volunteer Information
How You Can Help!
So you would like to contribute as a hands-on volunteer in animal welfare/conservation? Below are some tips on how to go about this.
To maximise your efforts it is best you volunteer at a local organisation, so your effort is not wasted in travel. It also needs to be in an area you feel passionate about and in an organisation where you feel your efforts will be achieving something.
There are many animal welfare/conservation organisations in each state/territory in Australia, however, below are some suggestions in order to assist you to find the 'right' organisation to assist. These include:
Animal Welfare Organisations
- Animal Welfare Leagues
- Cat Protection Societies (companion animal shelters)
Please contact your state/territory Department of Environment and ask them for a contact with a licensed rehabilitation and release group in your area.
- Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers - telephone 1800 032 501
We also advise you to:
- Visit the organisation where you wish to volunteer prior to committing yourself
- Let the organisation know how you want to help
- Advise the organisation what you see as your strengths, so they can best allocate your skills.
Once you are involved, remember the organisation may need to spend some time training you, so you may need to commit to training visits also.
If you are volunteering at an organisation and something occurs that you feel uncomfortable about, please always feel free to contact us here at HSI.
