Humane Society International provides support and assistance to much needed projects around the world that work to protect wildlife and their habitats from illegal trade, habitat destruction and abuse, provide veterinary support for wild, companion and farm animals, and help to alleviate suffering for animals caught up in times of disaster. Along with our policy efforts to bring about long lasting change, we are particularly proud of the number of on-ground wildlife protection projects we have been able to support around the world, helping a range of animals including bears, elephants, primates and big cats to name a few. These activities directly save wildlife and habitats in over a dozen countries, where the pressures for development pose an increasingly serious threat to all living things. In 2000, the first year we sent money to vital international projects in Africa and Asia, we distributed $38,000. Since those humble beginnings, we have now contributed almost $1,000,000. Many thanks to all of our supporters whose generosity and compassion have continued to make this possible.
