Be Cruelty-Free campaign to end Cosmetics Testing on animals

About Cosmetics Testing

Did you know that in many parts of the world, animals in laboratories are still suffering and dying to test cosmetics such as lip stick and shampoo? They have chemicals forced down their throat and dripped into their eyes and on to their shaved skin. It is the ugly secret of the beauty industry that Humane Society International is determined to end.

In Australia / New Zealand the government claims that there is little or no animal testing for cosmetics taking place but without a national ban in place, there is little to stop cosmetics suffering returning to our laboratories in the future. It is also still legal for cosmetics that have been newly animal-tested abroad to be sold in our shops. We want the suffering to stop so we're campaigning for a national testing and sales ban to turn Australia / New Zealand into a cruelty-free cosmetics zone.

Producing cosmetics without animal suffering is simple, there is no excuse for companies not making cosmetics the cruelty-free way. All they need to do is use combinations of the thousands of existing cosmetic chemicals already established as safe, combined with available non-animal test methods. HSI's global Be Cruelty-Free campaign aims to create the political will and consumer pressure needed to ban cosmetics animal testing wherever it takes place in the world. We want to turn the whole world cruelty-free - a world where no animal has to suffer for the sake of cosmetics.

TRANSPORTATION OF LIVE ANIMALS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

An increasing number of airlines have already taken a stance against the cruel business of transporting live primates by air for experimentation.  There are now only 3 remaining airlines who still participate, flying primates to laboratories - HSI has written to Air France, China Southern Airlines, and Philippine Airlines asking them to review their policies and stop contributing to the cruelty.

ACTION:  If you would like to help support our efforts, we attach a copy of one of our letters here (Download PDF, 41.5 kB) - you are welcome to use the information in it to create your own.  The contact details for the airlines are:

  • Mr Jean-Cyril Spinetta, Chairman and CEO, Air France, 45, rue de Paris, 95 747 Roissy CDG Cedex, Paris, France
  • Mr Tan Wangeng, President and CEO, China Southern Airlines, Guangzhou Airport, Airport Road 278, Guangzhou 510406, Guang Dong Province, China
  • Mr Lucio Tan, Chairman and CEO, Philippine Airlines, Corporate Communications Department, 3F Mezzanine, PNB Financial Centre, President Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, CCP Complex, Pasay City, Philippines

Please send copies of any replies you receive to HSI.
